Bris: Conversations about violence have increased

The Swedish children's support organization Bris reported an increase in conversations about violence among children in their recent annual report.

The Swedish organization Bris, which offers support to children, revealed in their latest report that there has been a significant uptick in the number of supportive conversations regarding violence, totaling nearly 63,000 last year. Among these discussions, issues related to domestic violence and economic vulnerability were highlighted, demonstrating a concerning trend. Maria Frisk, the organization's Secretary General, emphasized that in many cases, children attempt to devise their own strategies to navigate these challenging circumstances.

While the predominant reasons for reaching out remain mental health issues, familial problems, and conflicts within families, Bris's focus this year on economic vulnerability and violence reflects an urgent need to address these pressing concerns. The report specifies that while economic hardship is not the primary reason for children's contact, it still accounts for nearly five calls per week, indicating a persistent underlying issue affecting their overall well-being. Frisk pointed out that children often fear losing their homes or social connections like friends and activities due to financial strains.

Bris's findings illustrate the urgency with which these issues must be tackled, as children experience a strong motivation to change their situations. The rise in conversations about violence suggests that more awareness is needed to support children effectively and ensure their safety in potentially harmful environments. This highlights the importance of providing resources and strategies for both children and families facing these challenges, in a bid to foster a safer and more supportive environment for the youth in Sweden.
