Car owners trapped in Multicommerce pay up to $550 for pickup with cranes: this is how the process is carried out
In Guayaquil, Ecuador, vehicle owners are paying up to $550 to retrieve their cars from the Multicommerce structure following a recent fire incident.
The retrieval of vehicles trapped in the Multicommerce building in Guayaquil commenced on Sunday, nearly four weeks after a fire impacted the complex located on Eloy Alfaro and Cuenca streets. This operation is being conducted under strict security measures, with the participation of the Guayaquil Fire Department, the Municipal Public Company for Risk Management and Security Control (Segura EP), ambulances, municipal control agents, and members of the Canton Emergency Operations Committee (COE). The focus is on safely extracting vehicles that remained on the upper levels of the structure, which poses additional challenges due to the building's condition post-fire.
Using two high-capacity cranes, teams are methodically lifting vehicles from the rooftop area and lowering them to the street below. Early reports indicate that between eight and ten vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, have been successfully retrieved during the operation so far. According to Γlex Anchundia, the manager of Segura EP, they are working diligently to ensure that all trapped vehicles are removed safely and efficiently, as many owners are eager to pay the extraction fee, which can reach up to $550.
This situation highlights the repercussions of the fire incident that forced many vehicle owners into a predicament and underscores the importance of coordinated emergency response efforts in urban settings. The ongoing retrieval process not only alleviates some of the burdens faced by affected individuals but also reflects the challenges city authorities encounter in managing disaster aftermaths and ensuring public safety in the midst of such crises.
