Violence against women increases by 7% in the interior of São Paulo; rise is linked to the holiday period
Reports of violence against women increased by 7% in the interior of São Paulo between 2024 and 2025, attributed in part to festive periods.
According to recent data, cases of bodily harm against women in the interior of São Paulo have risen by 7% when comparing the years 2024 to 2025. This troubling statistic is particularly notable in municipalities like Jundiaí, where local authorities responded to 78 incidents related to emergency protective measures early in the year. Dênis Berni, the subcommander of the Jundiaí Municipal Guard, has highlighted that this uptick in domestic violence is frequently associated with festive times, where celebrations tend to correlate with increased reports of such violence.
The link between holiday celebrations and domestic violence incidents becomes especially concerning during high-demand times like the end of the year, Carnival, and summer holidays. These periods often see a spike in domestic disturbances, as suggested by historical data and observed trends. Berni points out that while festivities are moments for joy and celebration, they can also lead to heightened stress and tensions, resulting in negative outcomes such as violence in the household.
To combat this alarming trend, various protective measures have been implemented, one of the most significant being the "panic button" application. This app allows victims to notify the Municipal Guard directly during a situation of imminent danger, enabling them to respond quickly to incidents. Such initiatives reflect a growing recognition of the urgent need to address and mitigate domestic violence, particularly during peak times when risk factors are likely elevated.
