Base Candiru intercepts more than 600 kilograms of irregular fish
Agents at Brazil's Base Candiru seized approximately 605 kilograms of illegally transported fish during a routine inspection.
On Friday, October 6, agents at the Integrated Candiru River Base, situated in the Óbidos strait in Lower Amazon, intercepted about 605 kilograms of fish being transported illegally. The vessel, which originated from Manaus (AM), was headed to Santarém in western Pará when it was stopped for routine inspection. This operation highlights the ongoing regulatory efforts targeting illegal fishing in the region.
Ed-Lin Anselmo, the Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense of Pará, emphasized the significance of coordinated actions in tackling various crimes along the river system. He pointed out that the inspections have yielded positive results in identifying illicit cargoes, such as this fish seizure that lacked the necessary transportation documentation. The ongoing efforts reflect a broader commitment to combat not only drug trafficking but also environmental crimes in the area.
The operation, involving the vessel “Ana Beatriz,” showcases the vigilance of security forces in maintaining law and order in Brazil's rich but threatened ecosystems. There is a growing concern regarding illegal fishing practices, which pose severe risks to the biodiversity of the Amazon River basin, and this seizure is part of a larger initiative to safeguard the environment and regulate resource access in a sustainable manner.
