Integrated Action of Base Candiru intercepts 5 tons of Mapará in Óbidos

An integrated operation in Óbidos, Brazil, led to the confiscation of 5 tons of the protected fish species Mapará during a fisheries enforcement initiative.

An integrated action by Base Candiru on the Lago Grande region in Óbidos, located in western Pará, resulted in the interception of 5 tons of Mapará, a fish species that is currently protected under fishing regulations due to its breeding period. This operation took place following numerous anonymous reports regarding illegal fishing activities in the area, aiming to preserve the population of this species during a critical time for their reproduction.

On Friday, the 13th, enforcement agents discovered a small boat concealed in a river bend, which was confirmed to be illegally transporting the protected fish. The Mapará captures are prohibited during the 'defeso' period, a seasonal closure in fishing intended to facilitate the recovery of fish stocks. This type of integrated enforcement demonstrates a collaborative approach among various law enforcement agencies to combat illegal fishing and ensure adherence to environmental protection laws.

Following the interception, both the vessel's captain and the seized fish were taken to the Civil Police Station in Óbidos, where legal procedures are being initiated. The operation involved collaboration among various entities, including the Fluvial Group (GFLU), Military Police, Civil Police, and the Fire Department, showcasing the commitment of these forces to protect the aquatic environment and to promote sustainable fishing practices in the region.
