The victims, 23-year-old Gabriel Waiandt and 44-year-old Marciel Waiandt, were engaged in mining activities along with two others when the situation became perilous. As they worked, groundwater began to inundate the tunnel, prompting the group to use a diesel-powered pump to clear the water.
