NCCE, firm renew pact to expand phonics-based reading in colleges
The National Commission for Colleges of Education has renewed its partnership with Universal Learning Solutions to enhance phonics-based reading instruction in Nigeria's Colleges of Education.
The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) in Nigeria has signed a renewed partnership agreement with Universal Learning Solutions (ULS) to bolster phonics-based reading instruction across the nation’s educational institutions. This agreement was formalized at the NCCE headquarters in Abuja, where Gary Foxcroft, CEO of ULS, and Prof. Paulinus Okwelle, the Executive Secretary of NCCE, marked the occasion with a Memorandum of Understanding. This collaboration has been essential since its inception in 2013, focusing on improving literacy through structured and evidence-based approaches.
The initiatives under this partnership have notably included training programs aimed at educators involved in reading instruction, specifically employing synthetic phonics methodologies. The initial phase, which utilized the Jolly Phonics program, specifically targeted directors and desk officers within various NCCE units, equipping them with the necessary skills to enhance phonics instruction. The intent and outcomes of this training are geared towards significantly raising literacy levels among students in colleges of education throughout Nigeria.
This renewed commitment reflects a broader educational strategy aimed at improving literacy rates and teaching standards in Nigeria. By reinforcing the importance of phonics instruction, the NCCE and ULS hope to lay a stronger foundation for reading skills among future teachers, thereby influencing literacy and educational quality across the country's educational landscape. The collaboration could have long-term implications for the overall educational outcomes in Nigeria, particularly as literacy remains a crucial factor in national development and human capital growth.
