UBEC unveils learners’ support programme nationwide
The Universal Basic Education Commission launched the Learners Support Programme in Nigeria to ensure that every child has access to basic education.
The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Aisha Garba, has officially launched the Learners Support Programme aimed at ensuring access to basic education for every child in Nigeria. This initiative, which was unveiled during the Basic Education Summit in Benue State, is part of a broader strategy to address the critical issue of out-of-school children across the nation. Garba emphasized the importance of this program in promoting educational equity and stated that it is a commitment to leaving no child behind, irrespective of their background or location.
At the summit attended by various stakeholders, including government officials, educators, and community leaders, Garba highlighted that the Learners Support Programme is not merely an update of educational policies, but rather a transformative step in enhancing enrollment and retention in basic schools. The theme of the summit, "Innovative Strategies for Addressing the Menace of Out-of-School Children," underscores the urgent need to tackle this issue through collaborative efforts. The gathering serves as a platform for sharing best practices and evolving strategies that can help to mitigate the challenges facing education in Nigeria.
This initiative is significant as it reflects a national recognition of the barriers hindering children's access to education, particularly in regions with high rates of out-of-school children. By bringing together key stakeholders in the educational landscape, UBEC aims to foster a comprehensive approach to ensuring that all children receive quality basic education, thereby contributing to national development and the empowerment of future generations. The launch of the Learners Support Programme represents a hopeful stride towards educational inclusivity in Nigeria, with the potential for lasting impacts on the lives of countless children who have been denied their right to education.
