UNILAG restores SUG after nine-year suspension, elects new leaders
The University of Lagos reinstated its Students’ Union Government after a nine-year suspension, electing new leaders for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has officially reinstated its Students’ Union Government (SUG) after a suspension period of nine years, marking a significant shift in the university's governance structure. A statement released on the university's website revealed that the elections for new student leaders took place recently, during which the Students’ Union President and General Secretary were selected as part of the reinstatement process. This initiative aims to engage students more actively in university affairs and boost their representation in decision-making processes.
The elections were overseen by the university's Directorate of Student Affairs, with the Dean, Professor Johnson Agunsoye, leading the coordination efforts. The voting took place at the Common Room of Moremi Hall and was limited to current faculty presidents in accordance with the guidelines set for this transition. With Bolaji Akinpelu from the Faculty of Arts elected as President, the university is taking steps to ensure that the SUG functions effectively and adheres to the established regulations, signaling a return to more democratic practices within the institution.
This restoration of the SUG after nearly a decade signifies a broader commitment by the University of Lagos to enhance student representation and governance. The support for student unions is often crucial for fostering a vibrant campus life and addressing student concerns. With new leaders in place, the university community may see an awakening of student activism and involvement in addressing key issues affecting students, as well as a revitalization of student-led initiatives and programs.
