LASU gets new Chancellor
The Governor of Lagos State has appointed Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo as the new Chancellor of Lagos State University.
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has formally appointed Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara, as the new Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU). This decision was announced via a statement from the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Emmanuel Fanu, underscoring the governor's role as the 'Visitor' to the university. Oba Ogunsanwo succeeds Gbolahan Elias, who completed his tenure as the fifth Chancellor of the institution, marking a transition in the leadership at LASU.
The appointment of Oba Ogunsanwo aligns with the regulations set forth by the Lagos State University Law of 2004, which grants the Visitor the authority to appoint a Chancellor. This reflects the governance structure of public universities in Nigeria, where key positions are often filled based on political appointments rather than university governance. The transition to a new Chancellor is significant for the university's administration and can influence its strategic direction and stakeholder relations.
Oba Ogunsanwo's leadership as Chancellor is anticipated to bring new insights and vision to LASU. His royal status and experience could enhance the institution's profile both locally and nationally. As education in Nigeria faces various challenges, including funding and infrastructure, the effectiveness of the new Chancellor could play a crucial role in addressing these issues within LASU and furthering its academic mission to serve the student community and the state of Lagos.
