House collapses and car is swept away during storm in Greater São Paulo

A severe storm in Greater São Paulo caused multiple house collapses and swept away a car, though there were no reported injuries.

On the afternoon of Friday, the 6th, a significant storm impacted Greater São Paulo, leading to the collapse of houses in the southern zone of the city and sweeping away a car along the border between São Paulo and Taboão da Serra. One resident narrowly escaped the collapse of her home in the Jardim São Luís neighborhood, which was one of the hardest-hit areas during the rainfall. The local Fire Department reported that three residences collapsed on Rua Dança da Cigana due to the force of the water acting on their structures, and these buildings had already been previously marked for demolition by municipal authorities due to safety concerns.

Despite the intensity of the storm and its effects, there were fortunately no reported injuries among residents. The area where the homes collapsed has been cordoned off by the Civil Defense, indicating a proactive response to ensure the safety of individuals in the vicinity. In addition to the structural damages, the storm also led to flooding in other neighborhoods such as Jardim Santa Margarida, Piraporinha, and Jardim São Bento, highlighting the widespread impact of this severe weather event across the region.

The incident serves to underscore the vulnerability of certain areas in Greater São Paulo to heavy rainfall and raises questions about urban infrastructure and residential safety during adverse weather conditions. Authorities will likely need to evaluate and improve drainage systems and building safety regulations to better prepare for future storms and mitigate similar disasters.
