Researcher Hanayrá Negreiros releases book on Afro-Brazilian memory and fashion in May

In May, historian and fashion curator Hanayrá Negreiros will release her first book, 'Negras Maneiras de Vestir: Moda, Memória e Arte afro-brasileira', exploring the history of Afro-Brazilian fashion and culture.

In May, the debut book 'Negras Maneiras de Vestir: Moda, Memória e Arte afro-brasileira' authored by Hanayrá Negreiros, a historian and fashion curator, will hit the bookstores. The book aims to reclaim and highlight the often-overlooked memories of clothing worn by Afro-Brazilian populations throughout history and offers a fresh perspective on the narratives of the diaspora. Published by Paralela, a label of Companhia das Letras, the book features a preface written by Ana Paula Xongani, a creator and entrepreneur.

Through significant photographs, including ones from her own family, Negreiros reconstructs a forgotten past and provides a new lens through which to view this history. She emphasizes that in Brazil, a nation where the Black population has historically faced subjugation, creating images and narratives about their community serves as a powerful symbolic act. Negreiros states that this endeavor allows for the possibility of fostering positive narratives for the future.

Negreiros also reflects on how fashion has not only been a mode of expression but has also been a means of resistance and cultural celebration within the Afro-Brazilian community. By documenting these styles, the book stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Afro-Brazilians and aims to inspire new dialogues about identity, memory, and representation in Brazil's diverse society.
