These are the nine rivers and areas at risk under surveillance in Manabí this winter

Heavy rains are beginning to affect several cantons in Manabí, Ecuador, prompting authorities to activate winter plans and monitor critical rivers.

In Manabí, Ecuador, heavy rainfall has started to impact various cantons, leading authorities to implement winter emergency plans. Reports indicate that while no rivers have overflowed yet, incidents such as the overflow of the Cañitas stream in Sucre and water issues in Montecristi highlight the area's vulnerability. The Provincial Council is actively working since last June on the cleaning and protection of twelve critical rivers to mitigate potential flooding risks.

Ricardo Cabrera, Deputy Director of Risk and Citizen Security at the Provincial Council, emphasized the importance of prevention, stating, "It is better to invest $1 in prevention than $10 in response." This proactive approach aims to intervene before situations escalate, thereby reducing the potential damage from flooding. As the winter season progresses, the focus remains on maintaining a constant surveillance of the region’s water bodies.

Current data from the National Risk Management Secretariat reveals that the winter weather has already affected 2,116 individuals and damaged a significant number of homes—1,316 affected and 15 destroyed—alongside 63 adverse events in the province. Given that Manabí is home to 22 watersheds, critical rivers such as Chone and Portoviejo are under particular scrutiny due to their historical sensitivity during rainy seasons, underscoring the continuous threat of flooding in the region.
