Government activates red alert in Pichincha, Esmeraldas and Los Ríos due to rains

Ecuador's government has declared a red alert in various provinces due to an increased risk of heavy rainfall and associated hazards.

The national government of Ecuador has updated its alert levels in response to the rainy season, particularly highlighting the risks in certain provinces based on a technical analysis. This analysis evaluates recorded rainfall events, the number of people affected, and forecasts from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) for February, March, and April 2026. As a result, a red alert has been issued in the provinces of Pichincha, Esmeraldas, and Los Ríos, indicating a heightened risk due to anticipated precipitation levels.

In addition to the red alert, the government has placed various other provinces under orange and yellow alerts. The provinces under orange alert include Zamora Chinchipe, Guayas, Azuay, Cotopaxi, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, Napo, Orellana, Chimborazo, Bolívar, El Oro, Carchi, Imbabura, Loja, Manabí, Morona Santiago, and Sucumbíos, signaling significant concerns but less severe than the red alert provinces. Lastly, Tungurahua, Cañar, Pastaza, and Santa Elena are under yellow alert, which indicates a lower level of risk but still warrants caution.

This government action reflects a proactive approach towards disaster management, intending to mitigate the impact of potential flooding and other weather-related emergencies. The declaration of alerts is critical for mobilizing resources, providing timely information to residents, and ensuring that necessary preparations are made ahead of the predicted rainfall events, safeguarding the affected populations from possible disasters.
