This is milk carton skiing โ A joyful solution to the snow shortage was invented in a kindergarten in Ilomantsi
Ilomantsi's kindergarten staff creatively adapted to the snow shortage by introducing milk carton skiing, energizing children despite the lack of snow.
Due to an unseasonably warm February, traditional skiing outings in North Karelia, Finland, faced significant cancellations as snow levels dwindled. In response to this challenge, the staff at Vunukka Kindergarten in Ilomantsi discovered a fun and innovative solution from social media: milk carton skiing. This unique approach allowed children to engage in skiing activities even with minimal snow on the ground.
The introduction of milk carton skiing faced no resistance from the children, who were immediately drawn to the activity. Teachers, including early childhood educator Sari Vartiainen, reported enthusiastic responses from the youngsters, with comments of excitement echoing their enjoyment of the new skiing technique. Initial practice sessions occurred indoors, where the children could safely familiarize themselves with the milk carton skis before attempting them on the snow.
This inventive adaptation not only helped overcome the challenges posed by the poor snow conditions but also demonstrated the community's resilience and creativity in fostering outdoor activities for children. This experience highlights the resourcefulness of educators and the joy of childhood play, emphasizing how a simple idea can provide significant joy and activity for young learners, even in difficult circumstances.
