Plans to change territorial planning regulations announced by the Prime Minister
Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa has announced plans to change territorial planning regulations in response to ongoing disputes regarding land use for wind farm development.
Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa announced on social media her intention to change the laws governing territorial planning, following a meeting with key government officials and local leaders. The discussions centered around addressing conflicts that threaten public welfare, regional development, and national energy independence while ensuring that the interests of residents are considered. Siliņa emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach in achieving results that would benefit both citizens and the energy sector.
Next week, Siliņa intends to hold talks with the local government of Preiļi as part of an ongoing dialogue with regional leaders. The meetings come after Minister of Regional Development Raimonds Čudars issued a directive that temporarily halted specific territorial plans in Bauska and Preiļi counties. This decision aimed to prevent unjust restrictions on the establishment of wind farms, which are seen as vital for promoting renewable energy and reducing dependence on external sources.
The Latvian Association of Local Governments (LPS) has voiced strong opposition to Čudars' directive, urging for its immediate cancellation. LPS argues that the order causes significant consequences for local governance and development, potentially hampering the broader renewable energy initiatives that the country is striving to implement. As discussions continue, the outcomes of these engagements will be crucial for the future of Latvia's energy policies and local administrative harmony.
