Warm shower, care, and laundry: specialized care van available in Daugavpils

A specialized care van is now available in Daugavpils, providing essential hygiene services to the elderly and disabled who lack basic facilities at home.

In Daugavpils, Latvia, a new initiative has been launched to assist individuals in need of basic hygiene services. A 95-year-old woman named Heléna, who lives without hot water and struggles to wash her clothes by hand, is one of the first recipients of this service. This specialized mobile care van will help those who face difficulties in accessing these essential amenities, particularly seniors and individuals with disabilities. The van will visit a few times a month, providing critical hygiene services while complementing home care options provided by caregivers or social services.

The service is offered by the Latvian Samaritan Union, with spokesperson Andris Bērziņš highlighting its purpose as an immediate form of assistance for individuals who are otherwise unable to maintain personal hygiene at home. The mobile care vehicle aims to address significant needs, allowing clients like Heléna to receive vital care without having to navigate the challenges of poor living conditions. With limited resources at home, this initiative is an essential lifeline for many in the community who do not have access to necessary facilities such as showers or warm water.

Deputy Director of the Daugavpils Social Service, Rimma Vavilova, emphasizes the importance of this service, noting that it serves as a "savior" for those in dire need of basic living necessities. By providing regular access to hygiene care, the program aims to enhance the quality of life for its users, bridging the gap for vulnerable populations in Daugavpils. This initiative reflects a growing awareness of the critical importance of hygiene services for senior citizens and those with disabilities, demonstrating a commitment to improving community welfare in Latvia.
