Bust of gang operating online betting on T-20 World Cup, 5 arrested
The Noida police have arrested five individuals involved in an online betting racket related to T-20 World Cup matches.
In a significant crackdown, the Noida police have apprehended five suspects operating an online betting network centered around T-20 World Cup matches. The arrests occurred during an operation when the suspects were caught facilitating bets on the semi-final match between India and England. Authorities believe this gang had been running their betting operation through various online platforms for an extended period, highlighting the expanding nature of illegal betting activities linked to sports events.
According to Assistant DCP Manisha Singh, the arrested individuals had rented an apartment in a high-rise society located in the Sector-113 area, where they managed the entire betting racket. Police investigations revealed that the gang had secured this particular flat approximately a month and a half ago and utilized it as their operational base for online betting activities. This scenario sheds light on the ongoing challenges authorities face in combating illicit gambling, especially as events like the World Cup attract more gamblers.
The suspects were identified as Vinay Sehgal, Navdeep, Rajiv Sharma, Shaleel Seth, and Dev Kumar. Vinay Sehgal is believed to be the leader of the gang orchestrating the entire betting operation, while the other members played key roles in facilitating and managing the betting operations. This operation brings attention to the need for increased vigilance and regulatory measures surrounding online betting as sports gambling continues to gain traction in India and poses significant legal and social challenges.
