Awning that collapsed, hit elderly man and brought down wires in Dirceu was built without authorization, says SDU

A structurally unsound awning that collapsed in Dirceu, hitting an elderly man and trapping employees inside shops, was reportedly built without proper authorization, according to the local urban development authority.

On Tuesday, October 14, an awning collapsed on Avenida Principal in Dirceu, Brazil, striking an elderly man and forcing several employees to become trapped within the affected retail establishments. The Superintendência de Desenvolvimento Urbano (SDU) Sudeste reported that the awning was constructed without the necessary permissions, raising concerns about the safety and regulation of commercial structures in the area.

Davi Tajra, the executive superintendent of the SDU Sudeste, indicated that the awning, which deviated from the original building plans, likely succumbed to improper construction practices and water accumulation. Such scenarios are problematic as many commercial properties are leased, leading tenants to erect unapproved structures that lack adequate design and oversight, contributing to hazardous conditions.

The incident has prompted discussions regarding the enforcement of building codes and regulations in Dirceu. Local authorities may need to investigate further to prevent similar occurrences in the future and ensure that all constructions meet safety standards, protecting both businesses and the community.
