After the closure of LR 4, risks in the Latvian information space have not significantly increased
A recent parliamentary meeting concluded that risks in Latvia's information space remain largely unchanged following the closure of Latvia Radio 4.
In response to concerns about the impact of the closure of Latvia Radio 4 (LR4) on the security of the information space, the State Coordination Group for Information Space Security convened to evaluate the situation. Officials responded to reports regarding the perceived enhancement of Belarusian radio signals on the FM 107.7 frequency, previously held by LR4, and the potential risks associated with it. They gathered expert insights to ascertain the actual conditions in the information environment.
During the meeting, it was confirmed that the Belarusian radio station broadcasting on this frequency has not increased its transmission power, contrary to earlier claims. The analysis determined that the closure of LR4 would not adversely affect the reception of radio programs in Latvia's border areas. Experts from the sector, including representatives from SIA "Elektroniskie sakari," which manages the radio frequency spectrum in Latvia, contributed valuable input on spectrum management and international coordination efforts.
This assessment serves to reassure that the information security of Latvia is intact despite the closure of a significant radio outlet. The government remains vigilant in monitoring potential risks and is committed to engaging with industry experts to ensure the robustness of media transmission and the integrity of the information space.
