Āboliņš calls on deputies to decide to terminate operations of Russian-language radio stations
The chairman of the National Electronic Media Council of Latvia is urging parliament to make a decision on ending the operations of Russian-language radio stations funded by the state.
The chairman of the National Electronic Media Council (NEPLP), Āboliņš, has urged deputies in the Saeima to take action regarding the termination of Russian-language radio stations in Latvia. He argues that these stations should not be funded by the state, as they operate using state-owned radio frequencies, which contributes to a financial burden on the country. Āboliņš emphasizes that continuing to support these stations represents an unnecessary expenditure for Latvia.
More than a month has passed since the NEPLP submitted a proposal to the Saeima’s Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee to gradually cease the operations of Russian-language radio stations over the next eight years. However, the committee, led by Leila Rasima, has not yet included this important matter in their agenda, which has led to frustration from Āboliņš. He expresses concerns over the lack of progress and responsiveness from the committee regarding the proposal, which he views as vital for the cultural integrity and national interest of Latvia.
Additionally, Āboliņš points out that the Ministry of Culture, under the leadership of Minister Agnes Lāce, has previously expressed disinterest in supporting discussions on this approach. This situation highlights a potential divide within the Latvian government and underscores the ongoing debate surrounding the funding and existence of Russian-language media in Latvia, particularly in light of broader geopolitical tensions and the need for national cohesion.
