VIDEO: heavy rain causes flooding, leaves cars submerged and displaces 10 people in Guaratinguetá

Heavy rainfall in Guaratinguetá led to significant flooding, submerging vehicles and displacing residents from their homes.

Guaratinguetá experienced heavy rainfall from Thursday night to early Friday morning, resulting in widespread flooding across the city. Roads, particularly on Ministro Salgado Filho Avenue in the Pedregulho neighborhood, were inundated, leaving two vehicles nearly submerged. Other flooding incidents occurred along Bororó Street in Jardim Coelho Neto and Mega Farma Street in Campo do Galvão, as well as near the Cabo Chicão bridge in Beira Rio.

The heavy rains caused the Piagui River to overflow, resulting in house inundations in the Pilões neighborhood. As a consequence, ten residents were forced to evacuate their homes and were directed to a temporary shelter set up at the municipal school André Freire, where classes were cancelled for the day to accommodate the situation. The Civil Defense of São Paulo reported that Guaratinguetá received a rainfall total of approximately 150 millimeters during this period.

The flooding has raised concerns about infrastructure resilience in the face of climate events, as community efforts focus on providing support to affected families and assessing the damages caused by the storm. The municipality will likely need to reflect on its urban planning and drainage systems to mitigate future flooding risks during extreme weather conditions.
