Hawaiian canoe rides and river expeditions boost sports tourism in Santarém

Santarém, Brazil, is expanding its nature tourism offerings with a rise in Hawaiian canoeing activities, attracting visitors to its scenic rivers and beaches.

Santarém, located in the western part of Pará, is enhancing its nature tourism with the growing popularity of Hawaiian canoeing. Surrounded by fresh water rivers and sandy beaches, the municipality provides ideal settings for nautical activities year-round. Some of the most sought-after routes include the Meeting of Waters, Igarapé-Açu, Lake Juá, Alter do Chão beach, as well as expeditions along the Arapiuns and Tapajós rivers.

In addition to scenic sightseeing trips, multi-day expeditions have attracted visitors seeking more immersive natural experiences. This movement aligns with the rise of sports tourism, where trips are motivated by physical activities and also contribute to boosting the local economy, particularly in riverside communities. Entrepreneurs in the sector, such as canoeing athlete Denis Renê, have noted that demand for outdoor activities surged after the pandemic.

Denis explains that his personal journey with the sport began in 2002, and he advocates for the benefits of engaging with nature through such activities. The growth of Hawaiian canoeing not only offers recreational opportunities but also helps cultivate appreciation for the region’s rich natural heritage, thereby enhancing Santarém's profile as a destination for sports enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
