KM is puzzled by the KNAB's decision to evaluate the play 'Order No. 2'
The Latvian Ministry of Culture expresses confusion over the KNAB's decision to evaluate the play 'Order No. 2', citing concerns about censorship and freedom of expression.
The Latvian Ministry of Culture (KM) has expressed confusion regarding the news that the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) plans to evaluate the Dailes Theater's production of 'Order No. 2'. Lita Kokale, head of KM's Public Relations Department, emphasized the importance of protecting freedom of expression, as guaranteed by Article 100 of the Latvian Constitution, which prohibits censorship and ensures each individual's right to freely obtain, retain, and disseminate information as well as express their opinions.
KM articulated that the role of performing arts in Latvia, as a democratic state, is to foster artistic creativity that enhances civic engagement and critical thinking among the populace. The ministry's statements underscore a broader concern that any government scrutiny of theatrical productions could undermine artistic freedom and discourage creativity in the sector, which is crucial for a healthy democratic society.
Additionally, the Latvian Theater Workers' Union has stated that KNAB's decision is perceived as an interference in the creative and expressive freedoms of artists. They are urging Latvian officials to take a clear stance against any attempts to influence theatrical works, further highlighting the ongoing debates around the limits of artistic freedom and government involvement in the arts in Latvia.
