A Sad Sight Across Finland

The Finnish police are observing a day of mourning with flags at half-mast on March 6, as part of Interpol's campaign to honor fallen officers.

On March 6, 2023, police stations across Finland are displaying flags at half-mast in remembrance of fallen officers. This observance is part of an international campaign organized by Interpol, in which Finland is participating for the first time. The campaign honors police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty and aligns with the International Day of Remembrance for Fallen Officers, observed annually on March 7 since 2019. This year, due to the day falling on a Saturday, the Finnish police are recognizing the occasion on March 6 with solemn flag displays and a moment of silence.

In conjunction with the campaign, Interpol is also implementing the Global Blue Chain initiative, which involves illuminating buildings and landmarks across the world in blue lights as a symbol of remembrance. The Police College of Finland is participating in this initiative by illuminating the main building of its Tampere Hervanta campus in blue from March 6 to March 7, emphasizing the importance of solidarity in honoring those who have sacrificed their lives while serving the community.

This campaign not only fosters a sense of unity among police forces internationally but also raises awareness among the public regarding the risks and sacrifices inherent in law enforcement. By participating in this global initiative, Finland joins other nations in paying tribute to the men and women who have fallen while serving, reinforcing the commitment to safety and community respect within police work.
