The army reminds: after completing 9 months of service, reserve service awaits

Lithuania's army outlines new changes to conscription laws that strengthen reserve forces following mandatory service.

Lithuania is implementing changes to its conscription and alternative defense service laws, which will take effect in 2026, as part of an effort to enhance the capabilities of its military reserve. The Lithuanian army informs that soldiers who complete nine months of mandatory service will transition into active reserve, which has now been extended from 10 to 15 years. After turning 60, they will enter retirement from military service.

During their time in active reserve, soldiers can be called up for training and exercises, carry out peace-time tasks, and participate in national defense during wartime or mobilization. They will undergo periodic training ranging from 20 to 90 days, ensuring they refresh their military knowledge, familiarize themselves with new weaponry and equipment, maintain their skills, and improve their units’ readiness. This systematic preparation cycle is designed to sustain military competencies and ensure operational continuity.

These legislative changes reflect Lithuania's commitment to bolstering its national defense capabilities and responding effectively to potential security threats, particularly in light of the regional geopolitical landscape. The emphasis on extending service and enhancing training indicates a proactive approach to ensuring that the country’s military forces are well-prepared to face challenges and protect its sovereignty.
