Germany could also send compulsory service soldiers to Lithuania

Germany may send compulsory military personnel to Lithuania if volunteer positions in the armed forces remain unfilled.

According to a secret Defense Ministry document cited by the influential magazine 'Der Spiegel', Germany is facing a significant shortfall in its military personnel, with only about 10% of nearly 2,000 available positions in artillery, reconnaissance, and engineering units currently filled. In light of this situation, there are plans to enhance recruitment efforts to attract more volunteer servicemen. In an interview with the media group 'RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland', the chairman of the Bundestag Defense Committee, Rēvekamps, justified the potential deployment of soldiers to Lithuania, stating that the responsibility of military service—defending peace, freedom, and allies—extends beyond Germany's borders. This emphasizes the importance of deterrence in regions like Lithuania, where stability is critical. By the end of next year, Germany is planning to deploy a brigade of around four to five thousand soldiers to Lithuania, underscoring its commitment to NATO obligations and regional security in the face of persistent geopolitical challenges.
