PPC – METLEN join forces to develop up to 1,500MW of energy storage projects across three countries

PPC Group and METLEN have formed a joint venture to develop up to 1,500 MW of energy storage capacity in Romania, Bulgaria, and Italy.

PPC Group and METLEN have officially signed a Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) to create a new joint venture company that will focus on energy storage projects. Each company will hold a 50% stake in this partnership, aimed at developing a range of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) which could provide a total of up to 1,500 MW and 3,000 MWh of energy capacity. The initiative signifies a strategic collaboration between two leading companies in the electricity sector within Greece and the broader region, leveraging their strengths to maximize energy efficiency across multiple countries.

The projects will be primarily located in Romania, Bulgaria, and Italy, with a significant portion of the energy storage capacityβ€”1,000 MWβ€”expected to be operational within the next year. To achieve this, the joint venture plans to utilize state-of-the-art two-hour liquid-cooled battery systems, employing innovative Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology that enhances both the output and safety of energy storage solutions. Such technology is increasingly critical as demand for renewable energy sources grows, necessitating reliable storage to balance supply and consumption.

This venture not only represents an important step for PPC and METLEN in advancing their presence within the European energy market but also illustrates a growing trend toward sustainable energy solutions. By collaborating, both companies can better navigate the regulatory and economic environments across the three countries, while also addressing the urgent energy storage needs stemming from the rise in renewable energy generation. The success of these projects could set a precedent for similar initiatives across the region, further promoting energy security and sustainability.
