Serious criticism of the new journal system Cosmic
Critics are highlighting significant shortcomings in the Cosmic journal system, leading to increased workload for healthcare staff and potential risks for patient safety.
The new journal system Cosmic has faced serious scrutiny from healthcare professionals, particularly regarding its usability and effectiveness in providing clear medication dosages. Emma Ölander, chair of the drug committee in the Västernorrland region, emphasized that the system complicates the retrieval of dosage information, which is critical for patient safety. These usability issues not only make tasks time-consuming for healthcare staff but also raise serious concerns about the risk of incorrect dosage administration for patients.
The formation of the drug committee, comprised of various healthcare professionals from the region, aims to promote equitable and effective medication use. Ölander, who also works as a senior physician at the Sundsvall hospital's medical clinic, noted that the implementation of Cosmic led to significant disruptions in patient care. During the transition period, patient admissions at the medical clinic were halved as staff had to divert their attention from patient care to transferring crucial medication data from the old system.
The challenge, as highlighted by Ölander, lies not only in operational inefficiencies but in the potential long-term implications for healthcare delivery in the region. If the system continues to underperform, it could compromise patient safety and lead to broader systemic issues within the healthcare setting, underscoring the need for urgent assessments and potential revisions of the Cosmic system to safeguard both staff workflow and patient well-being.
