Paraíso do Tuiuti chooses storyline about Tia Ciata for the 2027 carnival

The Paraíso do Tuiuti samba school has announced its theme for the 2027 carnival, honoring Tia Ciata, a pivotal figure in the history of samba.

The Paraíso do Tuiuti samba school, based in São Cristóvão, Rio de Janeiro, has revealed its theme for the upcoming 2027 carnival, which will pay tribute to Tia Ciata, recognized as the 'mother of samba'. The samba school plans to celebrate her legacy through the theme "Ciata: the black mother of samba". Tia Ciata played a crucial role in the establishment of samba in Rio, hosting gatherings at her home in the Praça Onze area, where many foundational samba circles took shape.

The creative direction of the carnival theme will be in the hands of mourners Renato Lage, who is set to debut at the school, alongside historians Luiz Antônio Simas and Cláudio Russo. The intention behind this enredo is not just to honor Tia Ciata's individual contributions but also to spotlight the broader cultural importance of samba and its roots within Brazilian society, especially focusing on the historical recognition of Black women in this musical genre.

Paraíso do Tuiuti had a notable performance in the previous carnival, achieving 9th place with their enredo “Lonã Ifá Lukumí”, which explored the historical and philosophical aspects of the Ifá tradition from West Africa to Brazil. This new direction for the 2027 carnival reflects the school's ongoing commitment to cultural storytelling and the celebration of significant figures in Brazilian history.
