General Archive of Rio finds photo of Tia Ciata's house, where samba was born

The General Archive of Rio de Janeiro has discovered the only known photograph of Tia Ciata's house, a significant site for the development of samba.

The General Archive of Rio de Janeiro recently unearthed the only existing photograph of Tia Ciata's house, located at 117 Visconde de Itaúna Street. Tia Ciata, a prominent religious and community leader, played a crucial role in the urban black sociability of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the area known as Little Africa. This discovery underscores the historical importance of her home, which served as a gathering place for samba legends like João da Baiana, Pixinguinha, Hilário Jovino, and Sinhô, contributing significantly to the establishment of samba as a musical genre and its connection to Carnival.
