Sapucaí will have themes about Rita Lee, Bembé, Cíia, and Carolina Maria de Jesus

The second night of the 2026 Sapucaí Carnival features four samba schools celebrating Brazilian artists and the struggle for freedom.

The second night of the 2026 Sapucaí Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is set to showcase four renowned samba schools from the Special Group, each presenting themes that honor prominent Brazilian artists and champion liberation. The Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel is set to honor the late Rita Lee, a national rock legend who passed away in 2023, through its parade theme 'Rita Lee, the Patroness of Freedom.' This presentation aims to highlight Lee's irreverent spirit and her significant role in shaping Brazilian music and customs, celebrating her as a symbol of creativity, independence, and freedom of expression.

Following this, the Beija-Flor de Nilópolis will present its theme 'Bembé,' which draws inspiration from the Bembé do Mercado, a traditional Afro-Brazilian celebration held in Santo Amaro, Bahia, since 1889. The school intends to focus on candomblé as a vital expression of faith and cultural identity for Afro-Brazilians, underlining its historical significance in the cultural renaissance that occurred following Brazil’s abolition of slavery. The curriculum aims to not only entertain but also educate the audience about the importance of these cultural expressions in fighting for recognition and respect.

Both parades are expected to reflect a deep commitment to cultural heritage and social issues, resonating with contemporary struggles for identity and freedom in Brazil, particularly in commemorating the legacy of artists like Rita Lee and community practices like Candomblé that have shaped the nation's diverse fabric. The narratives presented will seek to inspire and unify the public around these crucial themes as they celebrate Carnival 2026 in Sapucaí.
