Fugitive sentenced to more than 33 years for 'Good Night, Cinderella' scam against the elderly is arrested in Rio

Elisangela Pereira da Rocha Andrade, known as Zanja, was arrested in Rio de Janeiro after being a fugitive since March 2025, convicted for a scam targeting the elderly.

Elisangela Pereira da Rocha Andrade, also known as Zanja, was arrested on February 5, 2025, by the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro. She had been evading law enforcement since her conviction for over 33 years in prison related to a scheme referred to as 'Boa Noite, Cinderela,' targeting elderly citizens. The arrest took place in Honório Gurgel, a neighborhood in the North Zone of Rio, where she was discovered after an extensive investigation.

Investigators revealed that Zanja operated alongside an accomplice only identified as Mário, conducting their scams in various neighborhoods throughout the city. The modus operandi involved luring elderly victims through dating apps, subsequently arranging meetings in restaurants or motels. There, she would drug the victims by tampering with their drinks, enabling her to steal their credit cards, personal documents, and cash after they were incapacitated.

Using the stolen cards and their PIN numbers, Zanja and her accomplice would make unauthorized purchases at shopping centers, with Mário impersonating the cardholders. This criminal operation drew significant attention from law enforcement due to its impact on vulnerable elderly individuals and led to a concerted effort to apprehend those involved. Zanja's arrest marks a significant step in addressing such scams in the region and protecting the elderly from similar future acts.
