Don’t hunt the cows, OPP warn after cattle break free from trailer
Ontario Provincial Police have cautioned hunters against targeting cattle that escaped from a trailer following a crash, due to safety concerns and potential legal repercussions.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have issued a warning to hunters in the Kenora area, urging them not to hunt cattle that recently escaped from a trailer following a vehicle accident on March 1. The incident involved a commercial vehicle, which led to the cattle breaking free, and officers are currently working to ensure the safe capture and removal of the remaining animals. The location affected is near Highway 17 and Inglis Lake Road, where the cattle are currently roaming.
In their statement, the OPP emphasized the importance of public safety during this situation, highlighting that hunting the escaped cattle poses risks not only to the animals but also to the removal team. They outlined potential legal consequences for those who choose to hunt the cattle, referencing charges that could arise under the Trespass to Property Act, as well as possible Criminal Code violations such as discharging a firearm recklessly or stealing livestock.
The authorities request that anyone who sees the loose cattle in the vicinity contact the OPP. This incident raises concerns regarding animal safety and public order, reinforcing the need for hunters and citizens to act responsibly in order to avoid complications and ensure the wellbeing of both the animals and the community.
