Indian Youths Held Hostage in Cambodia-Myanmar for Cyber Fraud, Two Agents Arrested
Gujarat police have arrested two agents involved in an international cyber fraud and human trafficking network that targeted unemployed youth with false job offers abroad.
The Gujarat police's Cyber Center of Excellence has uncovered a significant international cyber fraud and human trafficking network, leading to the arrest of two agents based in Surat, identified as Kaushik Pethani and Dhruv Dobaria. These agents exploited the desperation of unemployed youths, luring them with the false promise of well-paying jobs in foreign countries such as Cambodia and Myanmar. They utilized social media platforms, including WhatsApp and Telegram, to contact potential victims, organizing fake interviews and typing tests to make their scams appear legitimate.
Once the victims arrived in Cambodia and Myanmar, the agents confiscated their passports and mobile phones, effectively trapping them. Inside this foreign land, the individuals were held captive within camps and coerced into participating in cryptocurrency scams and online investment frauds. Such methods not only highlight the extent of the deceit but also the vulnerability of young job seekers in India, who are often desperate to find employment opportunities abroad.
The arrest of Pethani and Dobaria underscores the urgent need for enhanced awareness programs to inform young individuals about the risks associated with such fraudulent schemes. This incident also brings attention to the larger issue of human trafficking, which continues to be a significant concern despite ongoing efforts to combat it. It raises questions about the responsibility of social media platforms in preventing their misuse for such unscrupulous activities, as well as the necessity for robust legal frameworks to protect potential victims.
