Customs is planning to lay off border workers โ 140 jobs at risk
Finnish Customs is threatening layoffs of up to 140 workers at the eastern border due to ongoing closures since December 2023.
Since December 2023, the border crossing points on Finland's eastern border have been closed, prompting Finnish Customs to propose layoff negotiations for staff at these locations. The layoffs could potentially affect up to 140 employees, as job functions at the border posts have been significantly reduced. With no plans to reopen the border, Customs has been forced to reassess its staffing and operational needs along the eastern border. Previously, Customs managed to find alternative roles for eastern border employees in other areas of Finland, allowing them to maintain employment. Those roles included Customs tasks and providing assistance to partner authorities. However, traffic has shifted to southern and western ports due to the eastern border's closure, creating a demand for additional workforce in those areas, while leaving the eastern border staff in a precarious situation. The Customs has been maintaining readiness to quickly resume operations at the eastern border crossings, supported by additional funding from supplemental budgets. However, this additional funding has now come to an end, putting further pressure on Customs to make difficult staffing decisions as the future of operations at these crossing points remains uncertain.
