Finnish Customs has started negotiations with employee organizations regarding potential layoffs affecting up to 140 employees due to the ongoing border closure.
Finnish Customs has announced it is entering negotiations with staff organizations to address the potential layoff of up to 140 employees working at border inspection posts along the eastern border. The proposal for layoffs comes in response to the prolonged closure of border crossing points due to restrictions since December 2023. The closure has severely limited the workload for Customs officials, except for at the Vainikkala and Niirala rail crossings, effectively prompting the agency to reconsider staffing needs in light of diminished operational capacity.
