The Summer Festival moves from fields to airports due to extreme weather phenomena - only two suitable locations have been found
The Summer Festival will now be held at Kauhava Airport due to increasingly unpredictable weather conditions affecting traditional field locations.
The upcoming Summer Festival, known as Suviseurat, is transitioning from traditional field venues to airports for its next event this June at Kauhava Airport. This shift is largely attributed to extreme weather phenomena that have made field areas unsuitable for hosting the festival. Over the next four years, Kauhava will be joined by Pudasjärvi as the only other location that meets the required standards for safe event hosting. Organizers are actively searching for a third suitable location to accommodate growing safety requirements.
Weather-related challenges have posed significant obstacles to organizing the event on farms as heavy rains can make fields muddy, complicating transportation for guests in caravans or campers. Recent modifications to safety regulations also necessitate greater safety distances in caravan areas, further supporting the need for more robust infrastructure available at airports. With well-established facilities, including water, sewage, and electrical networks, venues like Kauhava Airport require less initial construction work, allowing for a smoother operational setup.
The organizing responsibility for this year’s Kauhava Summer Festival lies with the Peace Association of Ylivieska, alongside 12 other partner associations from the surrounding areas. This collaboration showcases a community effort to adapt to changing environmental and social safety needs while ensuring the continuation of this beloved Finnish event in a more secure and predictable setting.
