Unemployment Stands at 5.4% for the Quarter Ending in January, Says IBGE

Brazil's unemployment rate was steady at 5.4% for the quarter ending in January, according to the IBGE's Continuous National Household Survey (Pnad Contínua).

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the unemployment rate in Brazil remained unchanged at 5.4% for the quarter ending in January. This figure mirrors the unemployment rate from the previous quarter, which also stood at 5.4%. However, it marks a significant decline of 1.1 percentage points compared to the same period last year when the rate was 6.5%. The stability of the rate aligns with market expectations, which had forecasted an unemployment rate of 5.4%.

The IBGE's latest survey also provided a comprehensive view of the labor market, revealing a total of 5.9 million people classified as unemployed and an overall employed population of 102.7 million. Additionally, it was noted that out of the population not in the labor force, which numbers 66.3 million, around 2.7 million individuals are considered discouraged and thus have stopped looking for work. The statistics also highlighted the presence of both formal and informal employment within the country, where approximately 39.4 million workers are formally employed and 13.4 million are informally employed.

The implications of these figures suggest a recovering labor market in Brazil, as the consistent unemployment rate, paired with an increase in the employed labor force, indicates a slow yet positive trend in job creation. Nevertheless, the high number of people outside the labor force and those in informal work raises concerns about the overall quality of employment and the economic landscape for the working population in Brazil.
