Federal Police investigates suspect using main highway in Amapá for international drug trafficking

The Federal Police of Brazil is conducting an operation to investigate a suspect linked to international drug trafficking along the highway between Macapá and Oiapoque.

On Thursday morning, the Federal Police (PF) in Brazil executed Operation Subterfúgio, targeting international drug trafficking routes that connect the capital, Macapá, to the municipality of Oiapoque, situated at the border with French Guiana. The operation included the execution of a search and seizure warrant, where authorities confiscated a mobile phone believed to contain critical information related to the investigation.

Evidence gathered by the PF indicates that illicit substances have been transported from French Guiana or Suriname, categorizing these activities as transnational drug trafficking. The investigation has revealed connections to a suspect who was arrested in February 2024 for illegal transportation of irregular immigrants. This individual is now believed to have also been involved in the transportation of narcotics, disguising their activities under the pretext of offering passenger transport services.

The suspect, known as a 'picapeiro', utilized passenger transport as a cover for smuggling drugs, facilitating the movement of various types of narcotics between Oiapoque and Macapá. The unfolding investigation holds significant implications for regional drug enforcement efforts and highlights the complexities of combating cross-border drug trafficking in Brazil.
