Oyo project trains teachers, pupils to combat school violence
A new initiative in Oyo State aims to reduce school-related gender-based violence by training teachers and pupils in preventive strategies and child protection principles.
A pilot project in Oyo State, Nigeria, is addressing school-related gender-based violence by equipping teachers and pupils with essential knowledge and strategies to combat this pressing issue. The initiative, presented by Prof. Adefunke Ekine at a press conference, emphasizes the importance of preventive training as well as establishing effective reporting mechanisms for incidents of violence involving children. The program is part of broader efforts to strengthen child protection systems in the stateβs public primary schools.
Implemented by the Youthcare Development and Empowerment Initiative, the intervention adopts a two-pronged approach targeting both educators and students in selected schools across Ibadan. This approach is designed to create an environment that lessens the risk of violence while fostering a culture of respect and safety within educational settings. Prof. Ekine highlighted the fact that school-related violence is a lasting concern affecting many students in Nigeria, indicating the need for comprehensive solutions that actively involve all stakeholders in the education sector.
The implications of this project are significant, as it not only seeks to raise awareness about gender-based violence in schools but also aims to empower children and educators with the knowledge and tools required to navigate and report such issues. The success of this initiative has the potential to influence policy changes and improve the overall safety and security of school environments across Nigeria, potentially serving as a model for similar interventions in other states.
