Increasing number of passengers boosts Metro Company’s revenue

The Metro Company in Copenhagen reported a revenue of nearly 2.7 billion kroner in 2025, marking a significant increase due to a rise in passenger numbers.

In 2025, the Metro Company responsible for Copenhagen’s metro system achieved a remarkable revenue of nearly 2.7 billion kroner, reflecting a 14.6% increase from the previous year, as revealed in their annual financial report published on Thursday. This financial uplift is largely attributed to a substantial rise in passenger traffic, with the metro accommodating an additional nine million passengers compared to the prior year, culminating in a total of 135 million passengers, the highest recorded so far.

The Metro Company attributes this surge in ridership to two main factors: the gradual expansion of the metro network and the increase in events hosted in Copenhagen, which has made the metro the preferred mode of transport for attendees. This change not only highlights a positive trend in public transportation usage in the city but also underscores the metro's essential role in the overall public transport system, as noted by Tommy Ahlers, the company's chairman. Ahlers stated in a press release that these results indicate a growing preference among passengers for traveling via the metro.

Emphasizing the metro's centrality to urban mobility, the company's performance can be viewed as a reflection of broader trends in urban transportation, where investment in infrastructure and the hosting of cultural events can significantly impact public transit systems. As Copenhagen continues to expand its metro network and attract more events, it may see further increases in ridership and revenue, reinforcing the importance of the metro in the city’s public transport paradigm.
