The Metro Sets Passenger Record

Copenhagen's metro recorded an all-time high of 135 million passengers in 2025, marking a significant increase in ridership.

In 2025, Copenhagen's metro system reported a historic milestone, servicing 135 million passengers throughout the year. This impressive figure represents a substantial increase of 9 million riders compared to the previous year, underscoring the growing popularity of the metro as a primary mode of transportation in the Danish capital. The growth signifies not only the effectiveness of the metro system but also a shifting trend towards public transportation.

The most notable increase in ridership occurred on two key metro lines: the Cityringen (M3) and the new M4 line, which travels from Orientkaj to Sydhavn. According to Metro Company officials, the 17% surge in passengers on these lines can be attributed to the introduction of the new M4 stretch and an overall rise in usage of the M3 line. This expansion and enhancement of services are pivotal in accommodating the growing population and facilitating seamless urban mobility in Copenhagen.

Additionally, lines M1 and M2, which link central areas with the Copenhagen Airport and other regions like Vestamager and Vanløse, also experienced significant growth. Stations benefitting from urban development and the emergence of new neighborhoods, particularly around Bella Center, have attracted a larger number of commuters, highlighting the connection between urban development and increased public transit use. The upward trend not only reflects changing demographics but also emphasizes the importance of investing in public transportation infrastructure for sustainable city growth.
