Gujarat: More than 30 people, including 3 children, died from drowning in ponds, rivers, and canals

In Gujarat, over 30 people, including three children, have died from drowning in various water bodies during the festival of Dhuleti celebrated after Holi.

The festival of Dhuleti, celebrated in Gujarat on the second day of Holi, has turned into a tragedy for many families this year as over 30 people lost their lives due to drownings in ponds, lakes, canals, and rivers. The deaths included three children and occurred at about ten different locations, illustrating the annual risk associated with people bathing in water sources following the Holi celebrations. Many flock to these areas to enjoy the festivities, but unfortunate incidents often take a heavy toll, leading to unforeseen disasters.

Incidents were reported from various districts, with Ahmedabad city recording four deaths, and three children losing their lives in Mandal, a suburb of Ahmedabad. Other affected regions included Bardoli in Surat district with four fatalities, Mangrol with three, and Kim also reporting three drownings. The tragedies continued in Mahi Sagar district, Aravalli, Mehsana, Narmada, and Amreli, highlighting the widespread impact of these unfortunate events that have shaken the entire state.

Local authorities and residents attempted rescue operations in several places, but many lives could not be saved, underscoring the urgent need for awareness regarding water safety during festivals. The government is likely to face scrutiny over its preparedness for such events, as the recurring theme of drownings during celebrations raises questions about safety measures and community education, bringing attention to the importance of preventive actions to avoid such tragedies in the future.
