Charges are being urged against a man for influencing several voters in the municipal elections in Cēsis district

Latvian authorities have initiated criminal proceedings against a man for allegedly attempting to influence voters during local elections in Cēsis district.

On June 7 of last year, the State Police of Latvia commenced criminal proceedings against a man suspected of attempting to influence voters during municipal elections in Cēsis district. Shortly after the initial investigation began, the Security Police (VDD) took over the case due to its complexity and the nature of the allegations. According to the findings, the man is accused of influencing several individuals in a specific pagast (council area) of Cēsis district to vote for two particular candidates on a list for deputy positions.

Investigators revealed that the suspect allegedly transported voters to polling stations using his personal vehicle and unlawfully filled out their ballots, making selections on their behalf. Furthermore, he also accompanied one individual to the polling station and deceitfully instructed them on which candidate to vote for. Notably, the candidates linked to these actions were not elected to the Cēsis district council, highlighting the complexities and outcomes associated with electoral malpractices.

The VDD is advocating for the individual to be charged with deliberately obstructing persons in freely executing their right to vote for deputy positions. This case underscores ongoing concerns about electoral integrity in Latvia, as authorities actively seek to ensure that the democratic process is respected and upheld against any forms of interference or coercion that undermine voter autonomy.
