Yoon Seok-yeol cannot let go of election fraud claims: 'The debate with Jeon Han-gil was successful'
Former President Yoon Seok-yeol praised a recent debate on election fraud conspiracy theories conducted by far-right YouTuber Jeon Han-gil and Lee Jun-seok, leader of the Reformist Party, despite criticisms of the debate's credibility.
Former President Yoon Seok-yeol has expressed his support for a debate centered on election fraud conspiracy theories, which took place between far-right YouTuber Jeon Han-gil and Lee Jun-seok, the leader of a reformist political party. Following the debate, which was streamed live on YouTube, Yoon described it as 'successful and monumental.' In a handwritten letter to Yoon, Jeon conveyed his feelings about the debate and other contemporary political issues, which prompted a supportive response from the former president, thanking Jeon for his courage and dedication in raising these controversial topics.
However, the debate, held on September 27, was critiqued for its lack of evidence supporting the claims made by Jeon and his allies. Over approximately seven hours, the participants mainly argued that election fraud has been a persistent issue since World War II, and they failed to provide scientific evidence to substantiate their allegations. Lee Jun-seok published a fact-checking post revealing that out of 57 claims made by Jeonβs side during the debate, 45 were false and 10 mostly false, highlighting the dubious nature of the assertions about electoral misconduct.
Yoon's public endorsement of Jeon's conspiracy theories marks a significant moment, as it aligns the former president with fringe narratives regarding electoral integrity. This not only reflects Yoon's political positioning but also raises questions about the implications for public trust in democratic processes in South Korea, given the lack of credible evidence to support the claims and the apparent spread of misinformation through high-profile endorsements.
