Municipalities in Zemgale are preparing for potential flooding scenarios this spring, particularly focusing on areas prone to flooding near the Iecava River and Cepļa village by the Lielupe River.
This year, municipalities in the Bauska region are on high alert for spring floods, especially along the banks of the Iecava River, where specific at-risk areas have been identified. The Cepļa village near the Lielupe River is also highlighted, as it has a history of flooding in 1999 and again in 2010 when water levels rose significantly. Jānis Kalinka, deputy director of the local government, discussed how proactive measures are being taken to inform residents about evacuation plans in case of emergency situations caused by flooding.
The local government has been working to ensure that residents in flood-prone areas are aware of the potential risks and their options for evacuation. A meeting of the civil protection commission was held, discussing a specific action plan to be implemented in the event of floods. Among the preparations, markers have been set up to guide residents about safe routes and emergency exits, particularly in Cepļa, where it has been noted that the access road is the first to be affected in case of floodwaters. By identifying these risks early, the authorities aim to enhance community awareness and preparedness for possible flood events.
In addition to informing the public, the municipality has made infrastructural improvements to mitigate flooding risks, including the clearing of riverbeds to enhance water flow and prevent blockages caused by ice. These measures are part of an ongoing project that aims to safeguard local communities from the adverse effects of flooding, reflecting an essential effort in managing natural disaster risks in Latvia's rapidly changing climate.
