This Week Warmth Records Expected; Maximum Flooding in the Rivers of Zemgale and Vidzeme
Latvia is anticipating warmth records along with increased water levels due to melting ice in rivers this week.
This week in Latvia, weather conditions are expected to be mostly sunny, with a slight increase in cloudiness on Wednesday and Thursday, when some light rain might also occur. Predominant winds will be coming from the southwest and south, shifting to southeast later in the week, which will contribute to milder temperatures across the country. Afternoon temperatures are likely to rise to 9 to 14 degrees Celsius, with locations possibly reaching up to 16 degrees; however, coastal areas will experience cooler temperatures ranging from 3 to 8 degrees Celsius due to winds coming off the water.
During the first half of the week, nighttime temperatures will be relatively low, dropping between -3 to 3 degrees Celsius, but they are expected to warm up during the latter half of the week, remaining above freezing at 0 to 5 degrees Celsius. In the rivers of Kurzeme, water levels will decrease as the flood peak subsides, but in Zemgale and Vidzeme, more intense ice movement is anticipated, with ice jams forming in certain stretches of the rivers, resulting in a rapid rise in water levels. Floodplains along the Lielupe, Gauja, and Ogre rivers will be affected by the rising water levels.
Additionally, while the water level in the Daugava river has started to rise more sharply, significant ice movement and melting are expected only next week, with the peak flood in the Daugava forecasted for the following week. This weather pattern not only reveals notable shifts in seasonal conditions but also poses potential impacts on local communities and infrastructure due to flooding.
