Preparing for Snow Removal in Jelgava; Assessing Flood Risks

The Jelgava municipality is preparing for snow removal while also assessing the risk of flooding this spring, according to the city's mayor.

In Jelgava, the local authorities are actively preparing for the upcoming snow removal from the city streets and also evaluating the potential risk of flooding during the spring season. Mayor Mārtiņš Daģis explained during a press briefing that while leaving snow in green areas could be the most cost-effective option, it is not feasible in many parts of the city due to safety concerns, particularly in areas with high snow banks obstructing visibility near pedestrian crossings.

The mayor emphasized the importance of ensuring that snow is removed from the city, despite the associated costs, especially considering the safety risks for pedestrians and children. He noted that while budget allocations for winter services have historically been robust, this year's expenses will be higher than in previous years as the municipality plans ahead to mitigate any risks associated with snowfall.

As winter weather predictions indicate continued cold and snow for at least two more weeks, the city is preparing for various scenarios, depending on the weather conditions in late November and December. Daģis indicated that financial support for winter services would not be a problem, given that budget surpluses in recent years had been substantial, with 30% to 40% of allocated funds remaining unspent in previous winters.
