‘Drone Specialist’ Ukraine Offers Interceptor Systems to Middle East in Exchange for Patriots
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed to exchange air defense systems with Middle Eastern countries struggling against Iranian drone attacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently suggested that Middle Eastern countries, which have been facing drone assaults from Iran, could engage in an exchange of air defense systems with Ukraine. During a press conference held in Kyiv, Zelensky emphasized the critical importance of protecting airspace in the region and noted that Ukraine, which has been in conflict with Russia since 2022, is particularly suited to assist with counter-drone technologies. He specifically stated that Ukraine is in desperate need of US-made Patriot missile systems, which, if provided by the Middle Eastern nations, could be traded for Ukraine's drone interception weapons.
The Middle East is currently facing threats primarily from Iranian manufactured Shahed drones, which are capable of carrying 30 kg bombs over distances of up to 2,500 km. These drones have been utilized in recent attacks against pro-Western countries in the region, escalating the urgent need for effective defense mechanisms. The local militaries and US forces stationed in the region are struggling to counter the Shahed-136 drones, which researchers estimate Iran possesses between 4,000 to 6,000 units, along with other formidable weapons like the Kaman-22 cruise missile.
As these Middle Eastern countries rely on expensive defense systems such as the Patriot missiles to intercept drones, criticisms arise over the costs, as the price of a Patriot interceptor missile exceeds $3 million, compared to the $20,000 cost of a Shahed drone. The discussions underscore a strategic pivot whereby Middle Eastern nations may need to seek more cost-effective air defense solutions to cope with the aerial threats, thereby presenting an opportunity for Ukraine to establish military partnerships in the region while also addressing its own defense needs against Russia.
